Most people know that bedbugs feed on blood, but recognising them is the key to stopping an infestation early. Adult bedbugs are oval shaped, wingless and rusty red or mahogany in colour. Typically around 1/5 inch long, their bodies are flattened, allowing them to hide in the tiniest crevices. Nymphs look similar but are smaller and lighter, often yellowish-white.
Bedbugs feed at night and hide during the day in places such as mattress seams, cracks in bed frames, inside furniture, under loose wallpaper and behind picture frames. They are incredibly resilient, adults can survive up to 550 days without food. A single female can lay 200–500 eggs, which hatch in about 10 days, making early intervention essential.
Common signs of infestation include small blood stains on sheets, itchiness, swelling or inflammation from bites. While bedbugs are not known to transmit diseases, their presence can severely disrupt sleep and comfort.
Fleas are not linked to poor housekeeping and can affect any property, especially those with pets. The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common culprit, thriving on dogs and cats. Fleas progress through four stages—egg, larva, pupa, adult and can be extremely difficult to eradicate because pupae can remain dormant until they sense a host nearby.
Carpeted floors, pet bedding and shaded areas are ideal environments for flea larvae. Human flea bites typically appear in rows of two or three and cause intense itching, sometimes with a red halo. In some cases, fleas can also transmit diseases, making professional treatment vital.
